Monday January 4, 2010, was the filing deadline for both the Democratic and Republican state primaries.
Carol Morgan, a former educator and student counselor with the Lubbock Independent School District for 28 years, filed her intention to seek the Democratic nomination.
Since Morgan was the only Democrat to file and in all probability wins that nomination, she will face the winner of the Republican primary in the 2010 November General Election.
Three Republican candidates also filed to seek the Republican nomination for the office.
Former LISD school board president and former Texas Tech Regent Mark Griffin will face off against former Democrat and former Lubbock County Precinct 1 County Commissioner Ysidro Gutierrez; and the third candidate John Frullo.
All four candidates are vying to replace current State Representative, Republican Carl Isett, who declined to run for re-election.
Gutierrez switched political parties after being defeated in his reelection effort to the county commissioner’s court in 2008.
He had previously announced his intention to seek the Republican nomination for the position of Lubbock County Judge, but changed his mind again, when Isett announced his decision not to seek reelection.
The March primary will be held on March 2; with early voting starting on February 16, 2010.
